Jan 8 Welcome Ceremony at Chusugi

January 8, 2013 - Tokyo, Japan

This morning we were welcomed to Chusugi High School with a formal Welcome Ceremony in the school's upper auditorium.  We entered to the strains of  "Advance Australia Fair", walking past one thousand plus students and staff, waving blue Unity flags and cheering enthusiastically.

The Principal welcomed us in his opening address, which was translated into English by two senior female students.  Mrs Townsend, Mr Brown and Mrs Westermann gave speeches to the assembly, which was so quiet you could hear the proverbial pin drop.  A senior male Chusugi student also welcomed us on behlaf of the Chusugi students, after which Ryan Altschwager and Sarah Webster gave their presentations in Japanese - no pressure!  Ryan  then formally handed over the Unity College gift to Chusugi, a cricket bat signed by our state team, the Redbacks.  A cricket lesson coached by Ryan, the Vice Captain of the Open Boys' squad, is planned for tomorrow in Lesson 5.

We were then treated to an amazing performance by the Drama/Dance Club, choreographed by Mrs Ikeda, featuring purple-clad ninjas and talented American style cheerleaders, in a rousing introduction to our performance of "I am, You are, We are Australian" as the grand finale of the assembly.  Tegan Arbon shone as the soloist, ably supported by the whole Unity group joining in for the chorus.

For the remainder of the day, the students joined their buddies for lunch, with some going on to participate in after-school club activities such as Music or Basketball and others experiencing karaoke on their way home.

All in all it has been a fabulous day.  We thank God for his rich blessings.

Mrs Townsend & Mrs Westermann

(PS - video upload of the singing and cheerleading will be attempted tomorrow)
