Stuck in the US

February 15, 2007

I'm supposed to be on a plane RIGHT NOW. A whole winter of abnormally warm temperatures, then all this week they start predicting snow. "It won't affect me," I kept reassuring myself. "It'll miss Bradley Airport, or it'll hit early enough that it'll be cleaned up by the time my flight is scheduled to depart." It started freezing-raining at about 3:30 AM (I was awake, finishing up packing). It turned to a mixture of snow and freezing rain while my mom, dad, and I began our trip to Bradley.

My dad kept calling United Airlines, checking to see if my flight was scheduled still. He called at least twice while we were driving to the airport. On time, the automated message kept saying. Scheduled for 1:58 PM. As we pulled up to the terminal, however, he got the answer Delayed until 5:45. My mom and I got out of the car and entered the airport to hear a representative from US Airways announcing that all flights had been canceled for the day. I knew we were doomed after that. We joined the line for United to hear ten minutes later that all United flights had been cancelled as well. Sooooo, we headed back home.

Dad spent the rest of the afternoon on the phone trying to reschedule a flight for me. I e-mailed Macquarie so that I could have my airport reception cancelled and informed my international advisor that I was probably not going to be making the North Coast trip.

Update on February 16th: Dad booked me a flight leaving tomorrow morning from White Plains, NY, to Philadelphia, PA, a three-hour lay-over, and then a FIRST CLASS flight to San Francisco! I then spend a day in San Francisco, leaving at 10:18 PM from there to Sydney. I'm pretty psyched for the sight-seeing in San Francisco. Totally makes up for no surfing.
