On Wednesday, Club Ex held a cruise around the harbour that was uniform-themed. Derek and I went shopping for outfits Monday and found two Power Ranger masks at the Big W, so we decided to go as the Power Rangers!
The cruise was a lot of fun. It left from steps near the opera house, so you could see all of the exchange kids taking pictures in their costumes in front of the opera house. The cruise just went around in the harbour for a few hours, meaning that there were some really beautiful views.
Derek and I kept getting stopped by people for pictures. The conversation usually went like this: "Oh my gosh, you guys are the Power Rangers! Can I have a picture??" We'd get on either side of the person and smile underneath our masks, because we kept forgetting that you can't see someone's mouth through the mask. I have a vague idea of how it feels to be a mascot at Disneyland now, I think.
After the cruise, they dropped us off at a club, so we mingled with regular Sydney people. I was asked by a Sydneysider in the bathroom why everyone was dressed up. When I explained that we were all exchange kids, she was like, "Oh, so you're all foreign?" as though that's what explained our odd costumes.
Today I had my first tutorial for Theories of Subjectivity, and I think that should be a lot of fun. We had our first real discussion in Queer Theory, and I'm already in love with this class! Next week I have to do a presentation in tutorial (we all have to do one a week).
I went to the womyn's collective on Thursday, and it's a bunch of really cool women. We're going to a march for International Women's Day (it was yesterday, but the march is Saturday). Hooray for activism in a country I'm only in for another 18 weeks!
