Hey everyone! I hope you're all having a wonderful daylight savings' time day...all it means for me is that I know have to add nine hours (then subtract 24, since I'm 15 hours ahead of y'all) to figure out what time it is at home.
Saturday was the International Women's Day March. I met up with Sarah and Kat (Cat?) from the Macquarie Womyn's Collective at the Town Hall steps, a popular meeting place in Sydney proper and the beginning of the march. We watched a few speeches, then we all headed down George Street, taking the long way to Hyde Park!
While the march wasn't exactly a million women strong, there were enough people marching to make a statement. Sarah, Kat, and I somehow pushed up pretty close to the front. It was great seeing people's reactions on the road. We got everything from people clapping for us to bemused looks from construction workers...that wasn't too encouraging...The best response we got was a small child who started cheering with us as we marched through Hyde Park. I have it on a video, but unfortunately I can't figure out how to load anything...I'll get back to you guys on that.
Afterwards, we hung out and talked to some students from Sydney Uni and NSW Uni, trying to get different ideas for our campus. I had a flashback to how frustrating it can be at UR with people not attending meetings or events, people being just too busy to put effort into everything that we'd like to...hopefully I'll be able to remove myself from that, because I don't need to stress myself out.
Today Derek, Ralph, Alan (all from Apt. 6), Becky (from Apt. 10), and I went to the pool at the nearby hotel. They've snuck in before, but today there was a woman making everyone sign in. It's $5 to swim if you're not a guest at the hotel. We were caught, so Becky spotted me the money for the day. We had a lot of fun goofing around in the water and the hot tub. Alan and I got into a discussion about Queer Theory after I jokingly said Derek was a "bottom" (it's a long story), and Alan responded, "I'm surprised you know what a bottom is!" Hooray for gender and queer theory, giving me a wide variety of ways to tease my friends and impress their flatmates!
Speaking of all of those guys, we're all planning our spring break. It looks like a huge group is going to go to New Zealand for a week--me, Derek, Ralph, Alan, Alex (Derek's friend from home, remember him from about a week ago?), Alex's roommate Ben, possibly one of their friends, possibly Nut (Apt. 6 guy, he's kind of awkward, but since a good portion of Apt. 6 was going, Derek made sure to invite the rest of the apartment), and possibly Ben (yes, another Ben, this one from Apt. 6 as well). It's going to be insane, especially because there's a good chance that I will be the only girl. We're talking about renting out a van and driving around for the week. With a group that big, we're going to need to make plans beforehand.
After New Zealand, Alex and Ben have to go back to classes at Sydney Uni, but we have another week of break. Derek and I are talking about going to the Outback, and I'm sure someone will join us, and then I'll head down to Melbourne for a weekend of fun with Dave! I'm pretty psyched. Lots of money, lots of travelling, but that's what I'm here for, right? Lots of FUN!
P.S. I forgot to mention Friday night--Derek and I went to dinner in the Circular Quay (pronounced Key--yeah, I don't get it either) for no real reason. We went to this Indian place, and the food was SOOOOOO GOOD. I recommend it to ANYONE if they EVER come to Sydney. Indian Quay. DO IT. We also saw a drunk guy at Baskin Robins freaking out because they had not 31 but 32 flavors. He then proclaimed "I'm so drunk that I can't taste anything! Oooooh, throw the coconut on there anyway...." He was amusing.
