We arrived in the late afternoon at a cool hostel in Huacachina which is about 400m from a lagoon. The lagoon is really nice to look at but smells a bit. We had a BBQ at the hostel that night, and I ate loads of food! Got some much needed rest that night as we were keeping a fast pace of moving about. The next day we booked sandboarding for the follwoing day in the afternoon as we heard the sunset was really good. We then headed into Ica and visited the Regional Museum. Was interesting, had some really good pieces including a collection of skulls which where deformed! Apparently mothers strapped their childs heads in order to alter the shape of the cranium. Apparently the more deformed / dissproportionate the skull the more attractive the person would be. There was also a scale model of the Nazca lines out the back, although not in the best condition at least we got to see some of the shapes before flying over them for real. After lunch we headed back to the hostel to get ready for sandboarding.
We were driven to the dunes in huge sand buggies which were basically enlarged golf carts but with really powerful engines and a much stronger frame! We absolutely flew over the dunes getting all four wheels off the ground! None of us expected the pace of the buggy or the scale of the dunes. They were amazing to look at, a real luna landscape. We stopped after about 10 mins for our first go a sandboarding and we all went down lying on our front except for Liam who stood up but promptly fell down and hurt his shoulder pretty badly! I have it on video and will upload it as soon as possible. After that the dunes got bigger, much bigger but I tried standing up. The first attempt wasn't great but on the last go I got some real speed up and was flying before wiping out just before the end and giving myself whip lash (didn't realise until the next morn when it hurt to move my head). After the last dune we then went for another long ride in the buggy and saw the sun set. It was a really good day but we (especially me) were all covered in sand and enjoyed relaxing afterwards before an early night as we were on the move again to Nazca the next day.
