Arequipa

March 22, 2008 - Arequipa, Peru

We arrived in Arequipa in the morning all feeling pretty exhausted after a tiring few days. We spent the day walking around the city, experienced Rocoto Relleno, a Peruvian dish and is a favourite in Arequipa apparently. It consisted of a really hot pepper stuffed with meat and veg and beans with potatoes on the side. Was really tasty and only 8 soles or about 1 pound thirty!

The next day we headed for a bull fight which we had heard was on but were not sure where! We asked a taxi driver to take us to the fight and he thought he knew where.... we arrived there but the stadio was empty! He asked a passer by who said it was another stadio out of town , so off we headed! By now it was just past 1 o'clock when we thought it would start. How stupid were we, nothing is ever on time here and before the bulls came out we had about 2 and half hours of entertainment! The first bit was a man with a chicken and his son. It was utterly bizzare, he put the chicken on his head then juggled then threw his son about and did some other weird tricks! Next came bingo.... and it went on for ages!! They seemed to have messed the first game up and the crowd was getting really annoyed as they started again! Eventually it finished and then the bulls came out. The bulls gradually got bigger ad more agressive. They were not harmed, there were just 6 or so matadors teasing each bull but they gave as good as they got and one managed to tear a cape. The last bull was huge and jumped up the side of the stadio! Nearly hitting a woman standing by the edge! Unfortunately none of us got a picture!

We headed back and our next place to visit was the Colca Canyon for a small 2 day trek.
