Iguazu Falls

April 26, 2008 - Foz Do Iguaçu, Argentina

The 23hr bus ride was actually not too bad! It was one of the most comfortable buses we have been on and the food was not bad either. We arrived ahead of schedule and booked straight into a hostel for the night and then headed straight to the falls. They are located about 18km from Puerto Iguazu, from which there is a shuttle bus service. We were advised to go to see Garanta del Diablo, which is th main water fall as the sun would be behind us, thus making for better pictures! We got the worlds slowest train to the station near the falls and walked from there. There was a slight wind which meant every so often we covered with spray from the falls. It looked really powerful and the walkway is so close to  the edge of the falls. There was rainbows in the mist around all the falls. We spent about 30mins there taking pictures and looking at the views before we headed back to main station to walk Circuito Superior. This is a flat path which took us around the eastern part of the falls. We saw loads of butterflys along the way and managed to get some good pictures as they do not seem to be scared of anything! When taking a picture of one of the falls a bug landed on my arm and as I was concentrating on taking the picture I flung my arm down and my camera flung off my arm (I did have the wrist strap on before anyone asks!) and in to the metal walkway! It nearly fell off into the waterfall but Liam and I both hit the deck and grabbed it before it did! Unfortunately it has a big dent in it now and has probably lost its waterproofness! I am happy to say though, that it is still taking great pictures! After this the park was shutting so we headed back for some food and would do the rest of the falls the next day. On the way out we saw a tarantula walking by and took a picture!

We contemplated going over to the Brazilian side but you needed to get a bus around, go through border control and then pat another entrance fee so we decided not to bother as many people had said the Argentine side is much better! We started off going around Circuito Inferior which was really good and we saw a few lizards along the way. After this we got a boat to Isla San Martin which is the island located in the middle of the river with great up close views of the San Martin falls. There was a lot spray coming off the falls here as you can see in the pictures! After returning to the main trail we headed on the 7km return trek; Sendero Macuco, which takes you to a natural pool fed by a small waterfall Salto Arrechea. We had a swim in the pool and took some pictures of us standing in the waterfall before it started to rain! We then headed back to get the bus back to Puerto Iguazu where we got our stuff together before getting on another long bus this time Buenos Aires!
