Noosa

June 7, 2008 - Noosa, Australia

Noosa is a small town with tropical vegetation and beautiful beaches. On our first full day at Noosa I went for an early morning run along th beach which I would love to be able to do when back in England! Later on John and I went for a wonder about and ended up walking miles and miles! Noosa is split into three section, Noosa Heads, Noosaville and Noosa Junction. We walked fro our hostel in Noosa Junction via the beach to Noosaville thinking it was close by and there would be lots to do there, instead it was absolutely miles away and just full of expensive apartments and fancy places to eat! We ended up buying some steaks to cook in the evening to make up for all that walking!

We hired surf boards from the hostel the next day and took the free shuttle bus they run down to the beach. There wasn't really any waves when we arrived though as it was high tide (something we thought they could of told us considering we had told them we are complete amateurs!). So we got back on and headed to a beach further round Noosa Heads which was a small walk through the National Park area away. The beach, called Granite Bay was really beautiful and had a few surfers there but they were really far out and catching much bigger waves than we were after. We stayed close to the shore and tried catching some of the smaller waves. The thing was, the boards we had hired were much smaller than the boards we had had our lesson on and this coupled with the fact the waves were much bigger and more powerful made it very hard for us to surf! We had one really small board which I was on and just couldn't get anywhere near to standing up on. John had a slightly bigger board but equally struggled and didn't stand up. There were some young kids riding in waves nearby which made us chuckle as they were about 3 feet high (the waves and the kids!). So we gave up for a bit, I went back out after a break on the bigger board and found it much better, I managed to get fully up once and ride a wave in for a short time, I just held my arms in the air and was shouting at John which must of looked pretty amusing to all the other surfers! After we dried off we then headed back to the hostel to get sorted out for the morning bus to Hervey Bay.
