We arrived at our hostel after lengthy coach trip to find that our booking for the Fraser Island trip had not been made properly. We had booked it through a travel agent with the company Koala, who also happen to run a few hostels including the one we were staying at in Hervey Bay. They said they could accommodate us if we were in a rush or we could hang on an extra day and they would give us free accommodation for the night, a free evening meal and a couple of free beers each! I also got talked them into giving me a free blanket for my bed (not like South America here, you pay for everything including things you would expect to get, like a cover for your bed! We duly accepted the offer, especially as everyone else who got off our coach had twenty minutes before an hour long meeting about the trip and then had to go and get food etc with the rest of their group whom they had just met. I did not really fancy doing that as I was shattered so it worked out in our favour and was a bit of a result. For the rest of the day we just chilled on the beach and later on met a group of people who were now going to be on the same trip as us whom we got on well with. In the evening I went for a run along the beach in Hervey Bay as the sunset, it is a really really nice place, it always seems to be quiet as the beach is just so long.
The next day I went running again along the beach and then went for a dip in the sea on the way back to the hostel! For the rest of the morning we stayed on the beach, there was a bit of a rain shower when we arrived and everyone left the beach but John and I just went in the sea! It soon passed and we had a relaxing morning before heading back to the Fraser Island meeting. Everyone in our group was of a similar age and (thankfully) mindset. We had expected a group of 19 year olds just wanting to get drunk but we all got on really well. We sorted out our food and drink for the island in the afternoon and luckily a couple on the trip , Gareth and Sam, were travelling around in a camper van so went to a cheaper supermarket out of time to pick up all our stuff. We all ate together in the evening and then hit the sack early ready to set of bright and early for Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world!
