Agnes Water and 1770

June 15, 2008 - Agnes Water, Australia

Agnes Water is a really small and sleepy beach town which is just a few miles away from the town of 1770 named after the year Captain Cook landed on the nearby shores. We stayed at a hostel about a mile outside the centre which was really peaceful. It had a bit of a hippee vibe to it, it was run using only rain water, there were no locks on the doors, hammocks everywhere and there was also a lake on site where you could chill out.

We went to Agnes beach the first day and after mucking about there for a bit embarked on a walk down the beach to 1770 which we thought would take about thirty minutes. Two hours later and having still not reached the peninsula where 1770 was we thought abut turning back but decided as we had come so far we couldn't turn back! We walked as far as we could but the tide stopped us walking around the corner (which we didn't know until we peered around the corner!) so we begrudgingly turned back and started the long walk back! We decided to come off the beach as the sand was tiring and walk on the road. We headed up through a caravan site and walked back on the road which was thankfully much quicker.

In the evening went out for drinks and the one and only pub in Agnes which was a really nice place. The next day we spent chilling out at the hostel reading and just lounging about and cooked some burgers on the massive BBQ they have there.

On our final day I biked to 1770 on my own as John stayed at the hostel to read more and chill out. It was a boiling hot day and within minutes of starting the ride I was sweating loads. I rode past the caravan site we had come through after our marathon walk on day one here and found it was located about 100m around the corner from the town of 1770! From there it was a short ride to the beaches. I rode up a really steep hill only to find the road down joined up with the road I turned off to go up the hill (at least it was a good view at the top). I then biked out past the small harbour to the peninsula and took in the views. There were loads of small secluded beaches and I biked down a single track to one where I left my bike and walked about the rock pools and beach for a bit before lying down to sunbath and read in the sun. It was a gorgeous place and so nice to have it all to myself! After a swim I headed back in the early afternoon to do some washing and get sorted for overnight bus to Airlie beach where we will set sail for Whitsunday Islands.
