Kuala Lumpur

June 29, 2008 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

We decided to stay in China Town in Kuala Lumpur as it waswhere the cheapest accommodation was and there was a monorail station therewhich was just a couple of stops from the city centre. China Townwas really grimy and smelt really bad too probably because of all the rubbishin the streets and sewers there combined with the boiling hot weather andhumidity. The hostel we stayed at was the most basic so far but had a nice laidback atmosphere. I started taking Doxycycline (for Malaria protection) as Iwould be heading to Vietnamor Laosnext. The first time you take the pills you take a double dose then one everyday thereafter. I took the pills before breakfast and suffered for doing so! Ifelt terrible for about an hour so we just sat in the train station until Ifelt well enough to head into the city for a look about.

The next day we had planned to get up for the Euro Final butwere far to tired (it would of meant a 4am start!). We went to the Petronastowers only to find they were closed on Monday's! Next we went to theVietnamese Embassy to sort out a visa for our trip there. After filling in the necessary form and giving them amugshot we were told we had to come back on Wednesday to collect the visa whichwas maybe a day later than we hoped but at least we had got it sorted. We hadto go and get cash to pay for it so went to the massive shopping centre by the Petronas Towers for a quick look then went backand paid up. We then went to the cinema as it was far too hot to be walking aboutbefore hading to an Irish Bar to watch a replay of the Euro Final and have afew beers.

After a big lay in the next morning we visited the Batu Caves. The Batu Cavesare situated thirteen kilometers north of the city so we caught a local bus outto them They are the sacred place for the Hindu's in Malaysia. They consist of threemain caves and a number of smaller ones. The caves are made of limestone and400 meters long and 100 meters high. There were loads of macaque monkeys at the entrance, all theway up the stairs and in the caves themselves too. The caves were good to lookat but we thought there would be more to see there so were a little disappointed. After a quick look about weheaded back and went out for a curry.

We got up early the next day and queued for tickets to go upthe Petronas Twin Towersthen went to collect our visas from the Vietnamese embassy. After picking themup no problem we went back to the towers for our allotted time to go up. Youonly have ten minutes on the sky deck but that is enough as the view is notthat impressive, it is better looking at the buildings from themselves. We gotsoaked in monsoon rain the next day before we packed up ready to head toVietnam and not a moment too soon as we did not really think too much to KualaLumpur.
