Fun with Trash

April 15, 2008 - Santiago, Dominican Republic

So I am feeling much better!  After a short stint in the Clinica for a lasting cramping pain, it turns out that I have Kiddney Stones! Yikes!  But actually I am feeling much better and the pain is gone, so hopefully I have passed them. But it is good to get my clinic visit out of the way, hopefully it will be a long while before I am there again.  Today we visited the waste management facility in the city of Tamboril, which is about 10 min from La Cumbre, where I am living for Community Training.  I should clarify, when I say "facility"I really mean CITY DUMP, for about 25,000 people.  It was not a pleasant place.  Smelly, dirty (of course) and sad.  Sad because there are people that dig around the trash to find things to use, or sell for a living. It is heartbreaking.  I couldn't stand the smell for all of 5 min that we were there, I couldn't imagine spending my childhood digging in it!

Yesterday I gave a presentation to my training group about gardening.  Turns out I know more than I thought I did, considering I have ZERO gardening experience.  I guess that one volunteer day at the botanical gardens really was a good idea.  I am excited to find out my site, so I can start my own vegetable garden, and eat some HEALTHY, delicious veggies.

We are planning a community project for Earth Day (which is tues 4/22)  Hope you all do something Earth conscious!  I think my group is going to help students in our community paint trash cans.   I have only 8 days of training left in La Cumbre, then we head to Sabana del Mar, in the east of the country for a Brigada Verde event. (Brigada Verde is a youth project that volunteers can set up in their sites).  After that, then I will finally know where I will be! YEAH!

   XOXO,  More to come!

Anne! I am so glad to see your pictures and your beautiful smiling face! Kidney stones! yuck!! That is no fun at all. It sounds like you are doing amazing things and leaving your footprints in this world. Send me info so I can send you a little something. as well as a wish list of things you may want or need. I would also like to send things that you may be able to give to the community you are in. Let me know how I can help. I love you and miss you so much. My brother is getting married next Saturday and the honeymoon is in the DR. I'm sure you won't see him but it made me think about you. Write me soon. I have so much to tell you!
