Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

June 6, 2008 - Barcelona, Spain

Vall De NuriaYesterday was an absolute breath of fresh air from being in the city of Barcelona. Took a day trip with Max to the lovely valley of "Vall de Nuria", and went hiking in the lovely Pyrenees. The view from the last town to the valley was phenomenal, so many lush summer green trees that seemed to just stretch for ages and ages. We grabbed a quick brunch before we headed off in our trek.

The trek was so perfect. I've seen many stunning views before but the pyrenees walking from vall de nuria are pretty unforgettable. We passed some really cool horses, wild deers, sheep and other various wild animals along the way. There was no sight of civilization (which was great!) and it felt like we were the only 2 people in those mountains (and i think we were). I wouldn't call it an easy trek either. We spent a lot of time hiking steep uphills, my legs were shaking at one point. More intense than some of the uphill days trekking in Nepal. And the fact that there was a bit of snow and it became freezing cold the closer we got to the top was an added challenge too, but we kept going. There was this beautiful moment, around halfway into the trek, we were already pretty high up and we stopped to enjoy the thick blanket of clouds passing by through us, while we watched the views of the valley below and snowcapped mountains disappearing in the clouds!
Around 3pm it became really really cold, like 2degrees, so we picked a nice spot at the top of the mountain to have our celebratory lunch and headed back down shortly. It became even colder on our hike down, the sun was completely gone and there were times I even had to wipe cold frost that was forming on my eyelashes!
We got back to Vall de Nuria only minutes before it started pouring down rain.
Anyway, i thought it was a really perfect day, and we ended it with a nice thick spanish style hot chocolate and pizza. And a game of Wii tennis of course!

I also checkedout of Sant Jordi Diagonal Hostel, which felt weird and sad having stayed there for ages. I'll miss Eduardo. What a legend.

Peace
