Sleeping off the jet lag...

November 3, 2007 - Olongapo, Philippines

After the nap, we decided to go into Olongapo City in search of some of Dad’s long lost memories. We caught a Jeepney into town, that was pretty neat. Basically, Jeepney’s were leftover WWII jeeps, that were converted into people transporters. Now they are strictly something you can find in the Philippines. They deck them out in colorful lights, and polished chrome… and all kinds of stuff. The benches face inwards, running parallel to the frame of the jeep, with the back opening cut out, where you just climbed right in. We wandered up and down the streets, looking for some San Miguel Cerveza Negra and couldn’t find any..so in the end we found ourselves at the famous Sam’s Pizza. You have to understand that anytime we order from Pizza Hut or Domino’s back home, Dad goes into this litany about how good Sam’s Pizza is and that it’s sooo much better than Pizza Hut, etc. etc. Anywho, so we end up in Sam’s Pizza…myself, Boober, Mom, Dad, Mary Grace and Pol. Three girls were standing on the stage as live entertainment. I kept thinking, wow, a live band in a pizza joint! Anywho, the pizza was good… I wouldn’t compare it to Pizza Hut, because, well it wasn’t really the same kind of pizza. But all the same, we enjoyed the experience, as well as the ‘uniforms’ the servers wore…which were pretty much adaptations of the costumes from Peter Pan, right down to the elf hat with a feather! Afterwards, we got back into the jeepney and made our way down to the gate at Subic Bay. They have a night market, where you can go shopping at a flea market…only open in the evenings. We got a few things, for really cheap. And there, basically you bargain for everything. There was something that cost only 10 Pesos, which is like the equivalent of 25 cents here.. yet we still bargained it down to 7 pisos. I guess they don’t respect you if you just buy it at the price it’s advertised, like they look at you like you are throwing your money away. So we went home with our stash of goodies and slept like logs for the first officially full day of being here.
