In the Land of Coffee

May 19, 2007 - Seattle, Washington, United States

Well, we're here, in the the US of A!!

After a slight delay, we got to Seattle with no problems - not much interrogation at the border this time, which was a relief!

Seattle is strange, its like the city doesnt really have a purpose. And there are a lot of dodgy people here too, even more than Victoria/Vancouver, or maybe we just notice it more. There are, however, lots of coffee shops as one might expect, including the original starbucks! :D Our hostel is really really nice tho, probably the best yet - prime location, just over the road from the famous Pike Place Market (we havent seen any flying fish yet, but as its so close we keep popping over just in case). The night we arrived, the hostels provided free dinner, and it was one hellava buffet!! soooo good, and completely free! Breakfast is awesome too, with do it urself eggs and waffles and the usual fruit and toast for luynsey, and even fresh baked brownies for becky!! yummy!

So far, we've done a lot of walking, trying to get a feel for the city. We've wandered round smelly Pike Place Market and Pioneer SqUARE, 2 of the oldest areas in Seattle. Itsstrange, cause its only when you are surrounded by old buildings and pavements again that you realise how much you miss them! We did the Underground Tour, which took us around 3 of the 33 blocks that are underground, that seattle was built on top of. Not quite what we were expecting, as there wasnt that much to see, but my god could the guide talk! luckily she was entertaining, and we learnt a lot of saucy stuff about the city's past ;)

We have also seen the monstrosity of hte public library, which looks like an uglier version of the ROM in Toronto, and with great effort we hiked up to Volunteer park up in Capitol Hill, and up a 3 storey water tower for a good view of the city. Our dinner last night consisted of a slice from the heavenly Cheesecake Factory, hehe! We also went to a museum about the Gold Rush here in the 1890's (it was free...) and last night, we went to an improv comedy show set in space (it was also free...)

Today we're off to the Seattle Centre to get a close up view of the Space NEedle, and later, we'll head up the Bank of America tower, the tallest building on the west coast of north america, for a birdseye view of the city. We might even head to yet another china town...

NB: as for the pic, most stupid computers in hostels do not have the ability to upload photos, we have been trying :( we need to head to an internet cafe at soem point, but internet is free at this hostel so we'll do that another time...:D:D
