Cape Tribbity-trib-trib!

August 30, 2005 - Cairns, Australia

Well I'm back in Cairns again, after an overnight stint up to Cape Tribulation. We went via Port Douglas, a little seaside town where I went to the market and bought some nice jewelry, then we stopped off at Mossman Gorge. We went on a short rainforest walk, where our tour guide pointed out various plants etc. Turns out the Daintree rainforest,   where we were, is the oldest rainforest on earth, and has been renewing itself in exactly the same way for over 120 million years! Pretty impressive! We also went on a cruise down the Daintree River, where we saw Saltwater Crocodiles in the wild, just say on the river bank! One was over 4m long! Very cool :)

The next day, I spent the morning Jungle Surfing- cruising thru the rainforest canopy on zip wires! Was just like in the film Medicine Man! Was chucking it down with rain, but the only time u actually got wet was when u were zipping down the wires, as the canopy was so dense, barely any water actually reached us on the platforms. We were all harnessed up, wearing helmets with names on them. Mine was Felix, which I think was kinda fitting, but of course there were Maverick, Goose and Viper ones (Top Gun is a bit of a cult film out here). We did have the chance to do the last leg upside down, but I decided not to (chicken being my middle name!) so as a 'punishment' the crew let me dangle over the valley for ages in the middle of the wire. Pfft.  Was good fun tho, and something a little different!

I also went on a walk along the beach, up to Cape Trib beach which was nice. Didn’t spot any crocs in the sea tho (apparently they also inhabit the sea in this region!). Have been shopping today, and am going out on a live aboard tomorrow for 3 days, so lots of diving, including night dives!! Should be good fun!
