Bastille Day in Cannes

July 14, 2007 - Cannes, France

The morningafter the party, we chilled out on our balcony with coffee and breakfast, before going to Cannes in the afternoon to celebrate Bastille day. After spending a while looking for a parking space, we wandered down to the beach where I promptly fell asleep for an hour! We walked back to the car via the castle, where we had great panoramic views of the harbour and the mountains, and ont he way back to the city centre, we meandered thru Old Cannes (called Le Suquet) which once again has more character than the main town! We met up with the british stags in the big square by the harbour, which for Bastille day was converted into a huge games area. We played a couple of free games of Triominoes (like dominoes but the pieces are triangular) and a game called Rollit, the rules of which I only understood 5 mins before the end of the game!

Every week, a different country team puts on a firework show in the bay at Cannes, and this week, for Bastille day, it was Canada's turn. We walked up a million (almost!) steps back to the castle to get a prime viewing spot. after an hour of waiting (and practising my french a little with Thomas and Mohamed) the fireworks started. Not the most amazing firework spectacular ever, and the music that was played with it was just that little bit too quiet to be dramatic enough to fit. However, they did play the Canadian national anthem, which was nice and made me all nostalgic when I sang along (I was the only one doing so!). After the show, we made our way through the throngs of people in Cannes and went to the buildign where the Cannes film festival is held. We even stood on the red carpet - along with many many others! As usual, we stopped off before going home int he old town to grab some gelato, which was a very good idea as poor ol' Thomas must've needed the sugar to get home - it took us over 2 hrs to get to his place in Roquefort-les-Pins as we got lost so often!
