Cannes

July 14, 2007 - Cannes, France

Cannes is a strange place, as the film festival connotations set these high expectations of grandeur and glamour that any town would find hard to live up to all year round. Having missed the film festival, I cannot say what it is like when the celebrities are in town, but when they’re not, its just a normal town.

The beaches are very pleasant – long with lots of space, and with sand, making them great for swimming and sunbathing. The shopping is quite good in Cannes, with some basic high street shops along with your typical cheap tourist shops. It also has some up-market, designer stores, reminding you of the glitz and glamour that Cannes is famous for. We also saw the Palais des Festivals where the International Film Festival is held, and of cuorse, Joan got her photo taken on the red carpet!!

As you can imagine, we wandered up into Le Suquet (aka the old town) and climbed up to the castle. This gave a great view over looking Cannes, however the main part of the city itself is not much to see from above. We used this great vantage point however to watch the fireworks out on the ocean on Bastille Day, the national holiday in France.

Sadly, with it being an hour and a half away by bus, and about equally as long by train, we haven’t really been there more than twice. Many people here go out clubbing there, which I have yet to try, but I guess now that will have to wait until the springtime now...
