Punta Arenas

April 19, 2008

After Ushuaia we left argentina and tierra del fuego and crossed the magellan strait and to Punta Arenas in southern chile. It was my turn to book the hostel and i booked into a place recommended to me by an alaskan fella - and although it looked kind of dingy it was a really good hostel - was like staying in your granny's house - with old fashion curtains and decor - the owner eduardo was sound out and the place just had a good atmosphere plus we praticaly took over the house and kitchen and played cards and got chatting to some other backpackers - who gave us really good advice on doing the W (so called because of its shape) trek in Torres del Paine national park.

Punta Arenas was good craic we didn't expect much from the place and i think the locals haven't been over run too much by an influx of gringo tourists as we where treated like celebs on a nite out with the amount of attention we got ha.

Its a small town whose main tourist attraction is a near by penguin collony but all the peguins are gone to the antartic at this time of the year so we didn't get to see any - the weather was abmisal some of the days while we where there - but we went to a near by national park and climbed to the summit of a mountain called mount fenton (well myself and shane went the whole way to top) as another kind of a warm up for the 5 day trek in torres del paine.

Another reason for visiting punta arenas was a duty free shopping area called zona franca - to buy some stuff needed for camping and hiking - its was unbelieveably cheap compared to home and had everything - 160Gb ipod for just under 300 euro for example - cheaper than u would pay for one in the states - but alas as i'm trying to keep to a budget I didn't splurge to much

Next stop after is puerto natales as a base for going to torres del paine near by

I don't want to call you a liar Brian but...

...a quick search found you can get 160GB ipod for $327.49 in the states which is in and around €212.711 (give or take). I've a good mind to report you to the ombudsman.

Check out Amazon.com for all your electrical goods needs. :-p
