Supplies Drive For Public Preschool in Cuenca

April 27, 2012 - Cuenca, Ecuador

One of our favorite things we are doing is volunteering at a public preschool for kids ages 4, 5 and 6. Allie and I have been going about three times a week. The teachers are really friendly and sincere and the kids are kind, smart and cute. The kids know our names now and we look forward to volunteering. We play with them outside, help with them with their letters, and talk with them. But we have noticed that the school lacks some basic supplies for the kids like pencils. The other day when they were working each kid had about a stub of a pencil and when it was gone, there were no more available. The pencils they did have were sharpened by one knife the teacher had, not a pencil sharpener. They aren't able to finish their work without a writing tool.

We were hoping that a connection could be made between home and Antonio Bororero, the preschool.  A supply drive would be a great way to do this, with donations being dropped off at our house in Burlington or at St. Paul's Catherdral.  The drive will start now and go to mid-June when the materials and money will be brought down to Ecuador.

The school would really appreciate the supplies and the kids would benefit so much from it. Here is a list of things they asked for:

  1. Pencils

  2. Crayons

  3. Colored Pencils

  4. Scissors (scalloped, waved, with designs)

  5. Coloring books

  6. (We would also take monetary donations – we can buy extra of the following here)

    Extras-also helpful but not requested

  7. liquid hand soap

  8. toothbrushes and toothpaste for children

  9. pencil sharpeners (hand held)

Pictures from the school can be found under albums, "Back in Cuenca" and "Volunteering."  Thank you and donations can be dropped off at our house or St. Paul's Catherdral.

Muchos Gracias

Hi Mr. Brown we miss you. We are setting up a drive for supplies at Flynn School. We thought we would do this because we have what we need, but we thought it would be nice to help. We are making posters and a collection box to raise awareness of this cause.
Please respond.

Hey there, hope all is well. The trip to Australia went off with hitches to and from and there and back and ... but nevertheless it was successful in that we did go, we did what we were supposed to do, and we came back. I suggest going to Cairns, Australia. It is beautiful, like florida of 40 years ago, with Catskill Mtns. and an ocean. I felt at home as soon as I arrived and though I am glad to be home, it felt enough like home there that i wished we were still there.

Hey guys!
Just wanted to let you know I've been reading your blog and really enjoying it! I especially enjoyed the entry by Becca, and Allie's list of favorite things. Both of you are great writers! Sounds like you're having a lot of fun, but we all really miss you! Right now I'm finishing up six different projects for school, and after that I have to start studying for finals which are this week and next (you're so lucky you're not here for these last few weeks, Liz!). Then school's over! And then you come home! I don't know if you saw, but the Teen Tour's "Into the Woods". Did you decide whether you're doing it? Haha, this probably should be an email instead of a comment! Miss you,
