Yesterday we had tickets to the New York Knicks basketball game at Madison Square Gardens in teh evening - so we headed into NY late morning/ we are actually getting good at catching the train and navigating NY, however we did come a cropper at one stage on the subway with a 10 trip ticket running out wiht 2 of us inside and 2 out. It happened again later wiht Rob and I already inside and the girls outside. They had to get a ticket and a homeless man showed them how to both get through the turnstile on one ticket!
We meandered around SoHo which was very unique with lots of designer shops, art galleries and the apartment block where Heath Ledger died. It was amazingly crowded and full of cheap sps as well selling I love NY t-shirts. we have to go back for Lucy to get some for her friends.
We then navigated our way down to Ground Zero but with a combination of getting lost and not being able to hail a taxi - we got there toolate for the the WTC Tribute museum. We did however see the nearest Fire Station which you can see from the outside still operationanl but decorated with tributes to the 6 firies who died from that station. Outside there was a Xmas tree with all teh firemen who died on little cards - over 300 died on Sept 11. We could look at the area where they are building the new builidings and it is huge. The kids could not believe how big the buildings must have been.
We then headed up to Madison Square Gardens to catch the Knicks game. That was super cool, everything you imagine a basketball game in America to be with cheergirls, entertainment, amazing players and great atmosphere. We cheered the Knicks on to no avail- they lost by 10 points to the Minnesota timberwolves. I think the girls fell in love wiht a couple of the players and now are teh proud owners of basketball tops wiht those players names.
we then wandered up to Times Square. It was almost 11pm by this stage and all the shops were open, people crowded the streets and it truly felt like teh city that never sleeps. Times Square looked exactly like you imagine it. We finally headed to teh station and got home after midnight. What amazes me is how safe it all feels- I thought NY would feel dangerous but we have been surrounded by people, police and everyone is happy.
