The yellow brick road to Pailin

July 15, 2008 - Krong Pailin, Cambodia

So today was our first rural clinic visit. Up to now we had been in Phnom Penh and Battambang visiting national government health centers, NGOs, and private organizations. We were told the road would be bumpy but did not expect such a ride. I think it really hit home for all of us, these areas are extremely remote and it isn’t necessarily because of distance but more so because of poor infrastructure. And of course it’s probably a really tough sell to convince the Cambodian government to improve road infrastructure to improve health care access so our device is the perfect cheap alternative. After the five hour journey all of us had the same thoughts, how the hell would a pregnant women travel on this road to get herself tested? How would an infant manage to get from Pailin to Battambang to get tested? At the end of the trip our sore backs were proof enough that this device would be extremely valuable in Cambodia.
