We're in Beijing!

August 28, 2008 - Beijing, China

After a few hiccups along the way, we finally reached our Beijing hotel last night. Got a flight up from Shanghai which took a little over an hour and a half followed by the airport bus into the city centre - that's when it all started to go wrong.

We were dropped off at the train station and thought we need do no more than get a map from the tourist office and get to the hotel. Unfortunately, the tourist information was hopeless and they had no maps. We asked three policemen if they could direct us, but none knew the way - this was despite us showing them a map of the area on my phone and pointing to the map in our guidebook. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the Temple of Heaven which is a huge tourist attraction, but they still had no idea! We tried to get a taxi, but both the driver and attendant didn't know where we wanted to go either.

Eventually, after much stressing, we found a taxi driver who'd take us and was very helpful although he spoke no English. He spent ages looking at our maps, and eventually the penny seemed to drop. 15 minutes later and we were at the hotel so went to check in. It was then we found out he'd left us at the wrong hotel! We were at the Holiday Inn Temple of Heaven, but were actually booked into the Holiday Inn Express Temple of Heaven! Another 10 minute taxi ride later and we finally got here.

We've done a bit of sight seeing today in blistering heat. I don't think either of us have been anywhere so hot and humid. Fortunately we've sussed out the subway system so went up to visit the Lama Temple (pictures online now) this afternoon before heading down to Tiananmen Square for a quick look.

This is about the cleanest we've ever been as we're averaging about 2-3 showers each per day thanks to the heat!!

Off for more sightseeing tomorrow (Temple of Heaven, Beijing Zoo and the Olympic area are pencilled in) before starting our tour from a nearby hotel on Saturday. That'll take in some of the major Beijing tourist attractions before we head south on Monday to Xian.

Stay tuned, more coming soon

"Raindrops are falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit
Those raindrops are falling on my head they keep falling

So I just did me some talking to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
He's sleeping on the job
Those raindrops are falling on my head they keep falling ....."

P.s. sorry but tee hee re hotel!!! X
