你好

August 29, 2008 - Beijing, China

晚上好大家

We had an interesting experience last night when we hit the local restaurant for dinner.  Unfortunately, we forgot to take our phrase book out and the menu was only written in Chinese with a few pictures of what was available - what could possibly go wrong?!  Richard decided to go for a spicy dish with some form of meat in it and I decided to go for the safe option and choose the dish that looked a bit like chicken....need I go on?!  The waitresses and other diners seemed quite amused by our choice but never the less we were hungry and looking forward to some tasty local nosh.  When our dinner arrived we decided to share both dishes.  Richard's meal wasn't too bad although there was lots of chewy bits in it which we weren't sure what they were, brains or something?  My dish arrived and we had no idea what it was.  We managed a few bites before heading to the local mini mart for some crisps.  Later that night, we decided that perhaps I had ordered a sweet as it was towards the back of the menu, and thinking about the texture it was similar to blancmonge - we were eating both dishes together which must have been why we were getting laughed at!

Today was another hazy and hot day in Beijing!  We visited the Temple of Heaven and the Zoo before heading up to wander round the Olympic village area.  The Temple of Heaven was really interesting and very authentic - it's a huge area with very nice gardens and several temples in it. Built in the 1400s, it was used by Ming and Qing dynasty emperors to offer sacrifices and to pray for good harvests.

The Zoo was fantastic (especially the giant panda house - check out our latest photos).  The Olympic area was a little disappointing as there wasn't much going on - the Paralympics don't start till next week by which time we'll be in Hong Kong!

Have a great weekend, one week down, another 12 or so to go!

It was only a matter of time until the first weird food experience! It all sounds amazing, hope your tour is good. You're not missing much here although it has actually not rained for a couple of days - whatever next?! Enjoying reading about your experiences although trying hard to keep the jealousy in check. At least this time next week I'll be on a lovely Greek island.
