North Shore

August 7, 2010 - Honolulu, Hawaii, United States

We took a 20-minutes drive out to Waimea Bay that incuded a brief stop at "turtle beach" on the way. We're not really sure if it has an actual name, but once we stopped there, we realized where it came from.  There must have been 6 or 7 good-sized turtles nearing 3-1/2 feet in diameter.   After a brief visit, we continued on down to Cheryl's favorite beach - Waimea Bay.Cheryl's Favorite Beach

We snorkled our way down towards a jumping rock that had to be a good 30 feet high. There was also a good-sized rock nearby that we snorkled around and saw numerous types of fish that were feeding off of the algae growing on the rock. They weren't very big, but were full of different colors.  Cheryl took a little snooze on the beach and woke up to some cold sprinkles even though it was sunny.  Now Bryan knows what is meant by a sunshower. The funniest thing was that nobody even moved or popped up an umbrella as they all knew it would be over in just a couple minutes.

On our way back from the beach, we stopped at the Dole Plantation where we saw acres and acres of pineapple growing at its various stages. While we walked through the plantation, we learned that there are approx 28,000 pineapples grown for each acre of land.  Each pineapple in planted and picked by hand...talk about a Dirty Job in the red dirt.  Every plant only produces 2 pineapples over a 35-month period.  After the brief learning lesson, we went inside and enjoyed a Dole Whip, which tasted like a pineapple soft-serve ice-cream and boy was it delicious.  Sorry there is no picture, but we didn't have time to get the camera out. Yeah, it was that good.  We might even be stopping by there again....Pineapple!

We went out to a Cholo's for a North Shore mexican dinner where Bryan had his first Chicken Chimi Changa. For someone who "doesn't like mexican food" he actually enjoyed it. Perhaps, his tastes are expanding...?

We're to the swap meet at Aloha Stadium. More to come...
