Arrival in NY

September 17, 2008 - New York, New York, United States

Okay, here’s my first entry.

Flight ok got upgraded to world traveller at first I thought I was going to get some individual cabin, but all it turned out to be was a bit more leg room, sat next to some Swedish guy but couldn’t really understand him so spent all the flight watching Indiana Jones, again and again.

Got out of JFK at about midnight, boy was it hot & humid, about 80 degrees with 100% humidity, had some Rumanian cab driver who just wanted to chat about premiership football, so I thought not off to a bad start.

Had Sunday to myself sightseeing still in the early 80’s (temperature not the fashion) so walked round Central Park watched the baseball and done some shopping at Macey’s for stuff I ran out of time to buy in the UK, cheap over here Polo casual shirt about £35.

Done a dry run to where the office was located so all set up for Monday morning. Unfortunately on Monday arrived at the building only to find out G&T had left the building about 5 years previously, must mention to HR about their out of date brochures. After frantically phoning the London office I found out they had only moved just down the road to near Central Station, where they filmed the pram rolling down the stairs in the film the untouchables, when I was given the tour of the local area I passed on this useful bit of information but they didn’t seem very interested, I think they only said they had seen the film to keep me happy.

Spent the first couple of days trying to get a social security number, eventually got it on the 5th attempt, spent so much time at the social security office the woman knew be by name, but I did pick up some useful tips;

  1. Can’t give office as home address
  2. Can’t lie and give LA office as home address as they don’t post that far
  3. They close at 4.oopm
  4. Can’t use address in Queens and register in Manhatton

I think they may have been suspicious when I tried registering with three different addresses but got there in the end.

Should be up and running now though had a quick beer with Mark Kimpton who was just leaving the NY office after a two month stint, and got a beer tomorrow with a mate over here (Welsh Kev) so things looking up.

Sorry first entry not that interesting, its okay though if nothing exiting happens I’ll start making things up.

Cheers for now David

Not my fault though I was still at work.

Great to hear that you are settled in mate. There's something ironic about the "extra leg room" on your flight that I can't quite put my finger on it!

If you are out for a beer with Welsh Kev does he refer to you as "English Dave"?

Morning! Glad you're having fun. Particularly like your comment about shopping in the 80s - had an image of you walking along in a 'Frankie says relax' T shirt!

I am the GP team today as Wells and Bianca have abandoned me. I'll send Noble your love. I'm sure you miss Colindale. If you ever get too homesick I'll take pictures and send them to you.

Also, your football team now have the same number of points as a toothpick. Bet you're glad to be in the US!!

Finally got round to checking this thing out.
Glad to see you enjoyed New York and kept safe. Nice pictures, it’s like I’ve been there!! Do you remember when Joanne and I got a rare night off from Joshua, instead of it being a nice break, we just spent the night talking about him, well we had our first “Beyond Dave” drink with Steve V and Johnny P on Saturday, and it was just the same, kept telling Dave stories.
Joanne says Hi and Joshua says “who’s my god father ?”.
Let me know when you have an office mail and phone number so that I can get in touch.

Dave,

Can I also echo the "extra leg room" comment ? Surely not the first thing to pop into the check in girls head when she saw you was "here comes a guy who looks like he needs a load of room" ? But I digress, nice to see you settled in well and hope things are going ok....now that you managed to find the office and all ! Could only happen to you mate !

Ps - I always thought the pram scene was filmed in the ticket hall at Grand Central ? Not Union ?

Jeff,

I think Dave's confused - he means The Incredibles, not The Untouchables! When he comes back at Christmas, those pies are going to be done. And as for the chicken...
