10/21/2008 - 11/12/2008 - Randle, WA - Maple Grove

November 18, 2008 - Morton, Washington, United States

We arrived in Randle, WA on Tuesday, Oct. 21. We are staying in Maple Grove Resorts, a ROD campground. To our TT friends who are also ROD members, this campground has the most beautiful views of any we have been in so far. It is located on HWY. 131 centrally located between Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens. You can see mountains all around and the leaves are full peak right now. The Cowlitz River runs beside the campground. We drove to the north side of Mt. St. Helens Wednesday, 10/22 on Rt. 25. It was a beautiful sunny day. We were only able to drive up to the Bear Meadow area, but we could see a beautiful view of Mt. St. Helens from there. The road up to Windy Ridge Viewpoint was closed due to road damage from snow. There was some snow on the road in the higher elevation and some ice on the road. We saw a large herd of elk on the way back. It rained a lot while we were here, but we still managed to do a couple of good hikes in Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens. We enjoyed a Halloween Party on 10/25.  The rain caused the Cowlitz River to flood on the day we were leaving Randle. The manager knocked on our door and said we better hurry and leave as there would be 2 feet of water in our campsite. We went back up there a couple of days later and we took a picture of a semi that tried to drive through the water about 5 miles from the campground. His truck is still there. We drove to Mt. St. Helens from I-5 on Rt. 504 to Johnston Ridge Observatory a few days later where we were able to hike up close to the volcano. I am doing separate journals for all of the different areas we visited while we were in Randle. The next journal will be Mt.St. Helens from Johnston Ridge Observatory.
