August 21, 2007 - Aveiro, Portugal
August 21.. Got up at 5 am to try to avoid the predicted gale force gusts. It seems that there are Trade Winds here in Portugal ever year at this time and in the afternoons it gets really bad. This has happened for eachof the three days i have been in Porto. Decided to make an early attempt to get the low constant morning winds and get to my next destination... Aveiro just 34 nm south. Was on the open seas at 6 am. Winds pretty soft and just poked along for one hour. There is a 1 knot current that spins off of the Atlantic Gulf stream that also helps me. Managed to arrive at Aveiro at 12 noon and dropped anchor. This is the 3rd time i had to go to an anchor and it was a disaster. My windlass failed again and this time i unloaded 30 meters of chain before i could stop it. Then the winds were so great by this time. Force 7 that i could not pull it in manually. Gave up on the anchor and prepared a nice spaghetti dinner for myself and saw a movie on my computer “SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS” The anchor held the night and i spent the night worrying and scheming how i was going to pull it in. Settled on four plans. Use the winch, used the ship's motor to approach and then hand over hand it, use a block and tackle, if the wind has stopped just hand over hand. The latter was successful after a near sleepless night. Was on the water again at 7 am after breakfast and not stepping foot on shore.
