San Sebastian de La Gomera, Canarias, Spain

November 19, 2007

516 years ago at this very spot an epic journey started. In this harbor where Sharon quietly rests are the ghosts of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. San Sebastian del LaGomera, Spain. In the photo I am standing in Christopher Columbus’s foot prints. This is Christopher Columbus’s last landfall before  touching the tiny island of Maria Gallante just south of Guadelope in the Carribbean. Sharon’s next harbor in a month’s time will be in the Caribbean very close to Columbus’s new world landfall. Before Columbus departed from here he took water and lastly stopped to pray at the very Church , Nuestra Senora del La Asuncion, of the picture. This has become a ritual of mariners like me ever since and I have joined the long list of those who followed him and thus paid my respects here. The difference between Columbus and me is that I have GPS and radios, he had only his courage and faith.

What tremendous experiences you are enjoying!
If , and when your ' sailing days ' are complete ,
you would be popular in Educational Circles as a
knowledgeable Instructor !

dear Dennis,
don't forget Christoforos also carried a hard boiled egg. As an erstwhile acting captain I can, for reasons too obvious to name, always recommend taking several eggs instead of just one. The 'eggs of dennis' will thus become proverbial.
See you somewhere
Hans
