Manga Dua

October 18, 2007 - Jakarta, Indonesia

Ok. So decided I stopped counting the mosquito bites on my skin. I am pretty sure I can make out a couple of constellations on my legs by connecting the bites. Let's see, I can make out the Big Dipper & Orion’s Belt. Yikes!!

I visited several restaurants & malls. One of the malls we (my family & I) went to was Manga Dua  Mall (Two Mango). The mall wasn't so bad at first; many stores were still closed & people haven't returned from their villages from celebrating Lebaran (a muslim holiday). In Jakarta, it is very common for people to work in the city, but live far away. For example, my aunt's driver is from Flores, an island close to Bali, and this is the time for him to visit his village. For some people it may be years before they can go back.

The mall wasn't empty for long. People started to come & crowded the space between shops. You can forget about personal space because it doesn't exist. Things were cheap & it can be cheaper if you know how to bargain. It was an interesting experience to watch how people bargained for shirts, handbags, sandals, etc. It was like watching mini stories unfold in front of you.

You can find almost anything in this place: game consoles, food, glasses, toys, cell phone stores, etc. You can order a new pair of glasses & it will be ready within one hour. And you can find almost all knock off American DVD's for .50 cent a piece.
