About me
I was born in California, lived in Illinois and Colorado, and have spent most of my life in Wisconsin. I have been married to my wonderful and supportive husband, Jim, for 28 years and we have raised our three daughters Rachel (22), Katie (19), and Mary (16), in Whitefish Bay. I am a first grade teacher at Cumberland Elementary School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. I’ve taught for 18 years at the elementary level.
About my trip
Through the generosity of the Stephens Family Foundation, I obtained a travelship grant that will allow me to travel to New Zealand during the summer of 2011. This travel will enrich my language arts and social studies curriculum as I learn about early literacy strategies and explore the culture of New Zealand. As a first grade teacher, literacy is a primary focus. New Zealand’s literacy program is one of the finest in the world. Marie Clay, researcher from New Zealand, influenced early literacy by designing the Reading Recovery Program. This program is currently used in the New Zealand schools. Presently Whitefish Bay Schools uses some elements of the program. It will be valuable to see the program being fully implemented. As a school district we recognize the importance of differentiating for all learners. Another goal I hope to gain from this experience is how the New Zealand schools differentiate. Not only do we need to focus on our struggling learners, we also need to meet the needs of students that are performing above the standard. Exploring the history and culture of another country correlates with our social studies curriculum. We currently study families, communities, and cultures, focusing on their similarities and differences. I will experience first-hand the school community, the family, and the culture through total immersion as I live with a Kiwi family. By attending the educational seminars on educational practices and culture, I will be able to gain a deeper understanding of literacy programs and how cultural implications.
