EQUATOR CROSSING

December 11, 2009

We crossed the equator today, and on the Voyager they have a tradition. A ceremony is held by King Neptune and his Queen to officially grant permission to cross the sea. Of course, they aren’t alone. They have a swarm of Scallywags and Mermaids to assist in turning every Pollywog into a Shellback!

Let me fill you in! Basically the Cruise Directors, along with us entertainers, got together on the Pool Deck and put on a little show for the passengers in honor of crossing the equator.  Most of us were pirates, me included. Lorraine played the Queen, Chris played the Prosecutor, a loyal returning passenger played King Neptune, and Soren and Nic were dressed as secret service to the royalty.

Scallywags 2Scallywags

The whole thing lasted about 25 minutes. The main point of the ceremony was to initiate any Pollywog (a person who has never crossed the equator) and turn them into a Shellback (one who has crossed the equator). This involved each Pollywog passenger to come kneel in front of the King and get a ladle full of (for lack of a better word) goop over their heads. They were then escorted by the Mermaids to the showers and then thrown in the pool, officially becoming a Shellback!

It was a lot of fun!! The only downside was that it was raining for the first half of it. In actuality, though, it didn’t matter. It was even more fun because of that. After the ceremony was over we were allowed to jump in the pool and swim with the newly appointed Shellbacks. Not wanting to miss this rare opportunity Kelsey, Beckie, and me jumped right in!

This wasn’t the only time we will get to participate. It turns out that through our journey we will cross the equator a total of five times. That means King Neptune will be visiting us at least four more times!

Happy Crossings!

Love,

Erich
