My stay in Adelaide is slowly coming to an end (I'm leaving on Monday) and I can say now that it's not the most exhilarating of cities. In fact, it's only a few steps above Canberra. But I did do some fun things this week. THE highlight was, of course, the Flogging Molly concert on Wednesday. This was the first time I've ever been able to see them live and my expectations were very, very high. And they were met. It was an amazing 100 minutes. Which, coincidentally, was also the number of people attending the concert. Not a huge crowd, indeed. But that didn't really matter, since we were all packed together anyway. Most amazing moment of the concert: the band playing Within A Mile Of Home, my absolute favourite of their songs. I had hoped, but didn't expect, that to be played. But I got that one and quite a few more of my favourites. Ahhh... that's the stuff memories are made of!
What else did I do this week, besides the korfball match (which I talked about in my last post)...? Well, I did a lot of wandering around, which I seem to do wherever I am. Just step out the door and walk blindly in one direction. That led me to an Aussie rules practice a couple days ago. I decided to sit down and watch for a while. Not very exciting stuff, to be honest. But it was a way to pass the time. Also not very exciting is the nightlife here. The Irish pub I've been to is absolutely awful (DJ, trance, laser show, smoke machine...) and the regular bars were pretty much the same. I have one hope left for tonight before deciding Adelaide's good for teetotalers.
This week also kept leading me back to something Dutch. Korfball, meeting a Dutch Aussie and, believe it or not, but I even found a shop that sells drop. I couldn't resist, so I bought a bag (albeit a small one - the stuff's expensive!) and have been snacking on that. Might need to find that shop again to buy me a new bag. Another connection between Adelaide and Holland was Wie Is De Mol? (The Mole for the rest of you). Those who have seen the season with Marc-Marie might remember part of it being set in Adelaide. Because Adelaide's a small city, the settings for the assignments are everywhere. The four squares... the art shop in the fool-an-art-critic assignment... the mall of the suitcase-swap... for a fan of the program, it's a lot of fun.
So Adelaide was not that wonderful (though I can't say it was total shit). Ah well. At least I can now say I've been here.
