I am back in Adelaide. And it's noisy! And it stinks! The first few minutes back in the city after spending a week and a half in the country were awful. Got a headache immediately! It's subsided now (my senses are dulled to city-tolerating level), but it did set a good contrast between the city and the country.
This WWOOFing business was good! Very good even. Though there was practically no cellphone coverage and internet access was severely limited, I did not feel lonely or disconnected. Didn't have time for that. Work took up the morning and a couple of hours of the afternoon. After that it was usually time for a shower, a read (or a walk) and then dinner. An hour of telly and then bed. I saw this as a point of rest, a bit of escape from the city. Very calming this all was.
And of course it brought me new experiences. This is where I came in touch with Australians in their 'natural habitat', so to speak. I learned a lot about life on an Aussie farm, both the social side and the farming side. Of course weeding and shovelling manure aren't the most interesting of jobs, but feeding the animals is a fun little job, provided the goats don't headbutt you to get to the food quicker. And when it comes to totally new things, there's the welding and cutting wood. Yup, Eric learned how to weld. The working with a chainsaw was fun too. Like I said: new experiences!
But now I'm back in the city of Adelaide. Just for a few days. On Thursday I will be boarding the Indian Pacific train to the other side of the country. Perth, here I come!
