Soundtrack of Australia and New Zealand

September 5, 2008

I know I promised an epilogue, but this will have to do. :)
This is my last entry, unless I'm lucky enough to make another large trip. I'm thinking about Ireland, in which case this will become 'Eric in Eire', but we'll see.

As on any trip, certain songs have followed. Sometimes this was bychoice, sometimes it 'just happened'. This is my Soundtrack ofAustralia and New Zealand.

Men at Work - Down Under: Of course. This is one song that just has to be there. And yes, it is played surprisingly often, even in Australia.
Flogging Molly - Float: The entire album really. I bought this CD in Canberra (of all places) and I've been playing it ever since.
The Scared Weird Little Guys - Deadly Animals:Any song that begins with 'redback, funnelweb, blue-ringed octopus, taipan, tigersnake and a box jellyfish' is an immediate favourite.
Waltzing Mathilda: The unofficial Ozzie anthem.
Great Big Sea - Ordinary Day: My pick-me-up song. Sung in every street in every city in every country I've been at.
The Killers - Mr. Brightside:This song followed me around in NZ. It was a backpacker-bar favourite.A fair few boozy nights have included this particular song and itbrings me back to every Kiwi bar I've been to.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Jeremiah was a Bullfrog: While in the Outback, I woke up with this particular song blaring over the campgrounds of Yulara.
John Williamson - True Blue: Listen to it and you'll know why. What makes a real (i.e. true blue) Aussie?

I love how certain songs can be so connected to a place, a time, a feeling, a smell even!

If you fancy stopping a couple of days in London en route to Ireland, I'd be happy to donate a sofa for you to sleep on :)
