Now, the drive begins as we aren’t half way across yet ! We drove up through Port Augusta and across the Eyre Peninsula to Ceduna and then on to the start of the Nullarbor Plain. Civilization started to disappear as we neared the start of the drive across South Central Australia. The scenery for the first part of the Nullarbor was wheatfields (post harvest) then miles and miles of shrubby gum trees, then finally the “true” Nullarbor started – flat, with red dirt and tiny grey saltbushes as far as the eye can see. There is absolutely, unequivably nothing. Just a straight line of bitumen and the occasional car, 4WD or road train for hundreds of miles (1,038 kms, I think). Water is more precious than petrol (unleaded gas to Canadians) and the petrol is $1.86.9/litre. Quite dear!!!
