It‘s been far too long since we updated everybody on our trials and tribulations and, being a greyish afternoon down on the tip of SW Australia, we thought we’d take a few minutes to bring you up to speed. Our life has settled down and we are both into work routines. The kids in Nancy’s class appear to be a lttle better behaved and I spend most week days playing around with the forklift in the timber yard.
For Easter, celebrated by a chocolate bilby and wombat, we travelled to Margaret River and Busselton for 5 days. We stayed in a wonderful, clean and modern B&B in Busselton just a 5 minute walk from the beaches of the Indian Ocean. The hosts were wonderful and provided great breakfasts, and conversation. On the way up we climbed the 75m Bicentennial tree, higher than the more famous Glouster tree a fews kilometres away. It was, how would you put it .........a feat for those of us who are tall but yet height challenged. The Karri forests are quite something to drive through. Very serene and ghostly. Considering Australia is the most arid continent, an actual forest is not exactly what you normally expect to see.
Despite our initial misgivings we succumbed and took surfing lessons and got pummelled by the waves at a beach near one of the greatest surfing destinations in the world (Surfer's Point , Margaret River). The waves looked small from the beach until you had to paddle your board over and/or under them. We both walked around very gingerly for several days after with aching joints and muscles. Nevertheless it was a blast!!!! (Boyd did much better at surfing than I did as he was at least able to ride in standing up! ...sort of) The beach was beautiful, our version of surfing was a challenge and all was documented by a French film crew (Nancy really looked forward to that).
We also descended 12 stories underground at Ngilgi caves near Yallingup. It was quite an amazing experience. Apparantly the area is covered with caves of different sizes and types. We wanted to see more but eventually ran out of time.
The sunsets along the west coast were great and I think we managed to catch one each night at one point or another during the trip. We spent a lot of time wandering along beaches, watching surfers or surfer wannabes.
We are planning to drive up the coast to the Ningaloo reef in a couple weeks so we thought we’d practice snorkelling before we went. The Ningaloo is supposed to be nothing short of spectacular...the gentle whale sharks (up to 12m in length) are supposed to be around when we are. We may get a glimpse but I’m not sure what either of us would do if we saw something almost 40feet long swimming with us in the water. Nevertheless we may take an adventure tour to see if we can snorkel with them. I have access to borrowed snorkelling gear and we bought a mask and fins, etc. at the local dive shop here in Albany for Nancy and have been practicing a little bit. While the water is a little chilly, we managed to get a little snorkelling in here in Albany and up in Busselton. Nancy is improving dramatically and gets more and more confident each time out. Unfortunately, each time we snorkelled off the jetty in Busselton she managed to meet up with a few jellyfish and has been stung a few times. The snorkelling area near Albany is off a cute, secluded beach and we saw all kinds of fish in both locations.
