Finally here

June 22, 2008 - San Cristóbal, Mexico

Hey guys. Was a crazy day yesterday but I finally made it. My flight left at 945 and it was the worst plane ride ever. I got sick on the plane and when we arrived in Mexico City, something mysterously happened to my immagration form and when I got up to the counter, the lady started to yell at me in spanish and I had to start all over. We not a great start to the trip. Left Mexico City for Tuxtla Gutierraz, Chiapas. We then took an hour bus ride to San Cristobal through a really scary road through the mountains. The town is right in the middle of the mountains and is prety big. As soon as we arrived at the zocalo or the main square we were bombarded with these Maya girls trying so desperatly to sell us blankets and belts. Immediently a woman came over, introduced herself, called for a cab and I was suddenly gone away from everyone I knew. The ride to the house was really short but I quickly realized that my home stay mom didnt speak a lick of English. A little akward but she was really nice and I was comforted by the fact that she was used to having students in her home. My room is pretty big with my own balcony. I have a king size bed, dresser, closet, and tables. To get to the room I have to walk through a kids room and my moms room is directly behind mine. Very nice people. Single woman, son and wife with 2 year old little girl. Really was hoping for more kids but I like my home. After I settled in my home, I met up with my friend Ashley who lives right by me and we stupidly decided to wander through the streets to find a cafe where we were meeting Dani. We got SO lost and wandered through side streets where we saw raw chicken out on a table and I swear I saw a basket full of fried rats. The smells were so awful. Tried to ask for directions but when I did, they laughed. Maybe it was my accent or maybe I wasnt saying it right but for what ever reason, a woman with 2 teeth that looks like she is on her death bed shouldnt be laugh at me for simply asking a question. Oh well. Finally found where we were going and it was insane. It was like the whole town comes to the main square and just hangs out really late. There were people dressed up in ninja suits and stray dogs running around everywhere. Very strange. My senses are in constant overload right now. Trying to get settled but its really hard righ now. I barely have eaten in two days because I have had so much anxiety. Finding it really difficult to talk to my home stay mom but she is being really patient with me. My wireless doesnt work in my house which really defeats the purpose of a lap top but luckly there are internet cafes everywhere. Ill put some pictures up as so as I can. Got some really cool pics going through the mountains. I start school on Monday and Im actually really looking forward to it. Okay......thats all I have to say right now but will update as much as possible. Hasta luego.

Hey! It sounds like your trip has already become an experince! I had airplane problems getting to Connecticut, but nothing like yours. Your living accomidations sound amazing and the city sound awesome! I am excited to hear about your classes and see all you pictures. The language barrier may be tough, but I am sure you will be fluent soon. You will have to let me know how your doing in a few days. Take Care!

Wow!!!!! Sounds like quite the adventure. But no worries, it'll all settle down pretty quickly I'd imagine. Don't let the lady with only two teeth discourage you. She was merely laughing out of excitement for seeing a full set of teeth for the first time in many moons. I'm so stoked for you! Have an awesome time chica. Paz.
