I is Hungary!

July 24, 2008 - Poprad, Slovakia

Ok, well we are a little behind in the blog writing but we shall do our best to play catch up. We have had quite a busy week, and some bad luck but things seem to be improving. After Romania we went to Hungary and stayed in a wonderful hostel called 'The Loft' in Budapest. It is a massive city with plenty of stuff to do, the scale of the map doesn't quite reveal its magnitude. We arrived with our friend Tom whom we first saw in Bulgaria and decided to scope out the place during the rainy day (first spot of drizzle for a while). Would've been impossible to see everything in such a short time, so a quick browse round the old fortress and the National Gallery successfully quenched our culture thirst. On the third day - after a heavy night at the hostel & bar - we wandered (trekked) down to the House of Terror, which was the Nazis & Soviet headquarters of interrogation and brutality during the last century. It was very informative, but meandering through the torture cells and execution room with a hangover was abit hard to take in...
After saying goodbye to newfound-chums at the hostel we headed to Bratislava on the train. We heard it wasn't a particularly exciting city from other travellers, so we decided on booking just one night there. To cut a long story short, we got sold the wrong train tickets and the inspectors demanded we pay for our correct ticket on the journey. In order to avoid a fine, we got off at a random station somewhere on the border to Austria and stayed there for a few hours waiting for the next train. It never came...so desperately we went to a hotel near the station and luckily the owner offered us a lift to Bratislava (about 20mins down the road) which was wonderful of her. So we only really had time to sleep in the city, we will return one day to view it properly...

Olomouc was the next place of hospitality. A quiet town north-east of Prague in the Czech Rep...Very similar to Brugges, it has vast amounts of cobbled streets and fountains to marvel at. During this part of the trip we decided to relax and not do anything too strenuous, so we did a fair bit of walking while sampling the local cuisine when we could. There were also a few wine cellars scattered about, so we purchased a couple of litres of very cheap wine and rode some hired bikes out to a lake just outside the town. We had a great time and luckily the weather held up during our stay there...

We will be writing again very soon to catch up on this last week in the Slovakian mountains, and we promise more pictures too...

Lots of love xxx
