Galway Girl

January 11, 2007 - Galway, Ireland

Met up with a certain fiery red head. Jackie shows me some of the very walkable city. Hostel Pub Crawl, on which I'm almost certain I made a fool of myself after four too many Guinness. Hung over wandering...got wet with a mixture of horizontal rain and sea spray. Jackie fills me in a bit about Ireland: the nation's wealth is very recent, Jackie's mom was born in a farm house with mud floor (apparently not uncommon at the time), the average house currently costs 500,000 euro (that's 644,607 American Dollars!), until about five years ago divorce was illegal, contraception only legal since the 80's, the government hasn't even begun to acknowledge the existence of gay people, in the 70's women were commonly imprisoned if they had a baby out of wedlock (the child sent to America for adoption), as Jackie put it, "We really enjoy our punishing."

Tomorrow I'm off to Connemara north of here to see some greeness-woohoo!

An Irish man stayed on my couch last night and I thought of you -- an exchange of beings -- you probably sleeping on an Irish girl's couch, unless you got lucky, :)
