Today Grandmother, Mother and I decided to go to Wimbledon. I had my weekly house meeting this morning at 9:15, so after eating breakfast with them, I went to the house and they went to the British Library to check out the Lindisfarne Gospels, Gutenberg Bible, Magna Carta, Beatles lyrics, Shakespeare's portfolio, Da Vinci's sketches, and other important manuscripts. When they got back, we left for Wimbledon.
We had our lunch on the Tube; it's a pretty long ride. We finally found where we needed to go and walked from the station to the Wimbledon Courts and Lawn Tennis Museum. It was pretty neat. We got to see a lot of cool tennis stuff (old and new) in the museum. Afterward, we went to a charity shop and then got back on the Tube.
Two funny Tube stories: one from today and one from earlier this week that I forgot to write about. So today: we got on the Tube at Wimbledon and were waiting for the line to take us to High Street Kensington. Someone on the Tube expelled gas. I don't know if they meant it to be a joke, but it was very unfunny. No one wants to be trapped inside a metro cab when THAT happens. Second story: Mom, Grandmother, and I were sitting on the Tube talking and didn't realize the current station was our stop. I shouted, "This is us!" and took off. Mom and Grandmother hurriedly came behind me, but it was a little late. Mom got stuck in the Tube doors, her shoulders pulled back toward each other in an incredibly awkward and painful position. I, of course, was safely on the outside of the cab laughing. (I made sure she was okay.) I laughed because it happens to the best of us...
This afternoon Mom and I went shopping at Harrod's. Well, kind of shopping. I did buy a purse, but many of the items there were totally unaffordable. Harrod's is THE place to shop for London's elite. I pointed to a hair barette that I liked and Mom said, "That's cute!" and asked how much it was. Only 75 pounds. ($150!!) I told her I would have to come back and get it... I also tried on a pair of Fendi sunglasses. They felt SO good. Too bad they were 225 pounds-- nearly $500! For SUNGLASSES! Don't worry, Dad... I put them back down.
Tonight was our community dinner. We have community dinner every Wednesday night and someone in the house cooks for the whole house. I signed up for tonight so I could get some help from two marvelous cooks. Mom, Grandmother and I spent the afternoon peeling and boiling potatoes, making macaroni and cheese, cooking "English" peas, baking Parmesan chicken (my favorite!), toasting rolls, and baking cupcakes. We also made a couple of pitchers of cold, sweet tea! I think it was a success.
I have just finished packing a full suitcase to send back to the states with Mom and Grandmother when they leave. Hopefully this will help in packing for home. It's so hard when I can only have two suitcases! I would like to bring a few things home with me from Europe! Even if they aren't Fendi shades...
