I made a walk on the beach just after sunrise, with the falling tide always good for a few nice photos. I then set out for Lockhart River. The Historical Site is the airfield, important during WWII, now a bitumen runway with one or two operators flying tourists in and out. The settlement itself is aboriginal, no photos allowed, but it looks like any other small settlement and reasonably well maintained. About 600 people live there.
I back tracked part of the road of yesterday until I turned into Frenchmans Road, a non-maintained single lane track, absolutely 4WD with several steep decends and climbs, corrugation, soft sand, wash outs and the crossing of the Pascoe River, said to be deep with steep banks. The steep and rocky banks were there, the river was not that deep at this time, about 1 meter at the deepest point. After the crossing I took swim in the clear water. It is far from the coast, so no danger of crocodiles. After this crossing I continued to the next serious crossing, Wenlock River. I did not cross but made camp at around three thirty on the eastern riverbank which is actually the part of the river bed that overflows when the water rises in the Wet.
Although the track itself was certainly not busy, there are two more parties camping on the riverbed.
