Mitchell Falls

September 9, 2008 - Mitchell Falls, Australia

I left early in the morning for the Mitchell Falls. The road is not maintained which means corrugation for 80 km out and 80 km back. Howeer it is not as bad as the guide says: an hour and a half in stead of 6 hours according to the guide.

The Mitchell Falls is really a system of several waterfalls. There are the Little and the Big Mertens Falls, the last one dropping into Mertens Gorge, a narrow and deep gorge. The Mitchell Falls proper is a cascade of three waterfalls with deep pools in between. None of the falls was really flowing. The landscape is impressive all the same.

Along the walking track to the falls there are several aboriginal art galleries on the rocks, see some of the photos.

Many visitors don’t take the walk; they take a helicopter flight of a few minutes which drops them off right at the Mitchell Falls. That gives off course a great view on the falls, the pools and the gorges.
