Trekking in Northern Thailand

March 9, 2008 - Chiang Mai, Thailand

Today we have returned from a three day trek around the Chiang Mai area.

We were picked up on friday morningĀ in a converted landcrusier and taken to an elephant camp. Apprently the elephants were onced used as traditional labour power around the land and as tourism took the lead as the greatest income generator in the area the elephants were out of work. So the only way they could be kep active was to take us havey white travellers on rides. note that they were kept very well and were obviusly loved by their owners.

After the elephant camp we began the trek into the jungle mountains. We treked for about 3 hours and arrived just before sunset at a village tribe (we opted out of seeing the long neck tribe for a number of reasosns). We speant the night here with the rest of the group, 10 in all, looking out over the jungle from high up.

Sat was a day of more trekking anf waterfalls. We arrived a a riverside camp for the night.

Today (sunday) once againĀ involved more trekking, white water rafting and bamboo rafting.

Heres the unbelievable bit.....all of the above cost just under 15quid each, and this included all food

Tomorrow we are going to spend another day in chiang mai to chill ourselves out before we start the journey to Laos.

Check out the pictures of the trek. (once i find a PC that is working well enough to uplaod them)
