Girls dancing with cutie patooty

January 17, 2007

On our first night in the old town of Quito, we happened upon an amazing performance of indigenous music and dance. It was inside the courtyard of an old building, and there were probably 200 people scrunched together on the stairs watching. The dancers seemed to be from a dance school, but one of their little sister´s (probably 3 years old) joined in on the fun. She spent her time trying to chase after her older sister. It was hilarious and adorable. It also tells a bit about the culture here--they may be doing a public dance performance for hundreds of people, but the little kids can be included too. The indigenous dance is an expression of their past and national pride as much as of an artform.
