Amazing Andorra!

June 25, 2007 - Sant Julià de Lòria, Andorra

I thought since I enjoyed Andorra the most so far I would write about it next. Getting to Andorra is quite difficult. There are no train routes there so the only to get into the country is by bus. You can catch the bus from Toulouse or from Barcelona. I went from Toulouse to Andorra and then to Barcelona afterwards. The roads are VERY bendy and narrow...I’m glad I wasn't the one driving. The views were amazing! As we were driving in you gradually climb the mountains and get phenomenal view down into the valley. I wish I could have stopped for pictures...but in the end it was ok because the city/town I was staying in (Sant Julia de Loria) had a nice view as well.

At first when I got dropped off at the bus station I had trouble finding my hostel...or at least what I thought was supposed to be a hostel...the reason I missed it was because it was a 4 star hotel! I couldn't believe it...I was paying 35€ (52 Canadian dollars) for a 4 star hotel. Cheap things in Andorra seemed to be a recurring theme. Because most people only go to Andorra for the ski season everything was on sale. Furthermore they have no tax on goods in Andorra so things (especially cigarettes and liquor) are just generally cheaper.

I spent part of my second day hiking near my hotel. They have a bus system that takes you part way up the mountain and from there you can get hiking trails. For me Andorra was like the Rocky Mountains with ZERO tourists. In the afternoon I walked to the capital city (Andorra la Vella) to do some shopping and to see some of the sights. Here a lot of people seem to know each other and the people are very friendly. I had a little trouble talking to people here because they speak Catalan. It looks and sounds a lot like Spanish, but is slightly different it took a while to get used to!
There is not too much to do here except shopping and hiking, but it is DEFINITLY worth coming to just for the amazing scenery.
