Salta appeared to be much larger than we expected. It has a lovely centre with elegant plazas, many old colonial buildings and lot's of really nice bars and restaurants. While strolling through the little Sunday market we soon realized that people look different here, they haven't got this European touch anymore. Upon our arrival we found out that the tren a las nubes (train to the clouds) that seemed to be on the must do list has only just reopened after a long time. We felt lucky at first, but soon found out that it's completely overpriced and heard from other people that it's a ride to hell rather than to the clouds. That made our decision. Instead we did a short hike up the hill, 1070 steps one way and enjoyed the lovely view at the top with a refreshing milkshake. It was a sunny and hot day, perfect to just laze around. Later we went to the MAAM museum, a new and modern museum showing real child mummies that was found buried on the mountain at 6739 meters. A bit shocking, but with an interesting story behind it. They were sacrificed to the mountain following the death of the Inca leader at that time. The researchers that discovered the bodies in 1999 discovered that the three children, aged 6, 7 and 15 were taken to the top of the mountain, given alcohol to put them to sleep and then incarcerated.
