Ko hopping

August 15, 2006 - Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand

The ferry to Ko Tao was an adventure in itself. Travelling 8 hours in a small rickety wooden boat that managed to hold 86 passengers, half a dozen motorbikes, around 10 caged pigs (I shit ye not!), and countless boxes of crops, is an experience you don't have everyday!

I arrived on Ko Tao early this morning. My main reason for going there was to do some more diving, as it supposedly has some real nice dive sites. After enquiring about the weather conditions and predictions, it became pretty clear that diving there would be a bit of waste of money. It's been raining there for days (big parts of the road were actually flooded, there was about half a meter of water there!), the water is very choppy and visibility is low.

Because diving is the only thing one can do on Ko Tao (it's just streets that are lined with dive centres) I made the quick decision to take the first ferry out to the next island, from where I'm writing this journal entry. Ko Phangan is famous for its Full Moon Parties and is on the itineraries of most backpackers to Southeast Asia. The Full Moon Party was about a week ago, so I won't be experiencing that event, as the amount of time I have left in these regions is rapidly running out. There's a Half Moon Party in a few days though, so that might be fun to attend.

This will probably be my last stop in Thailand. After that I'll be travelling back to KL, Malaysia.

Rides on boats with caged pigs, Full Moon and Half Moon Parties...you're really going for the Asian experience ;) Can't wait until I get there and check it out myself. Have a safe flight home!
