Lost my Underwear in Istanbul

May 19, 2008 - Istanbul, Turkey

Hey y'all. So I hear that the weather is finally nice in Edmonton so that is definantly making me feel less special now! But I'm glad that it is. It's about time spring came! Anyways, so to continue my Istanbul adventures I will explain what happened to my underwear. Last time when I had wrote my entry Linda and I were getting our laundry done by some hole in the wall location. We had gone there because when we asked the guy at reception where we could find a place to laundry we got sent there, and to our surprise it was a place where they did it for us. We were pretty weary of these guys cuz they seemed to be checking us out quite abit and we needed all of our clothes washed. Since Linda was feeling under the weather, it was my job to pick up the clothes at 10 at night (after drinking a couple friendly beers). I got there and I was very shocked at how much it cost and how light our clothes seemed to feel in the bag. I took the clothes to the hostel and then went back out with the people from the hostel. When I got back late at night when the room was dark I was soo confused because I couldn't find my pjs or any of my underwear. When I wake up in the morning I discovered that we were missing all of underwear and some other clothes from this place. Luckily, the staff here were really great and when we told them our complaint they took us back to the place and found that there was a whole extra bag of laundry that they never gave us. Either way, we spent a long time being really scared of what had happened with it. :S

Just a culture of Turkey comment. I HATE MEN. Everywhere we go they try to talk to us asking "where you from?" and when you talk to them they dont let you leave and if you walk away they continue yelling at you!!! AHHHH soooo frustrating! I'm ready to go back to areas of Europe where the men leave you along and you can blend in.

So far Istanbul has been amazing. The sights out do any other sights I have seen in Europe so far! We ventured into the Blue Mosque where we had a strict way we had to look - no shoes in the mosque, hair covered, long skirt past the knees and our shoulders covered. The mosque was beautiful, but very different from regular churches because there were no pictures on the wall or anything else. I was very shocked because of all the people that were disrespectful in the mosque. Before they had even gotten into the mosque they had taken off their scarves and were practically yelling while people were praying. After we went to the Blue Mosque we went across the street to the amazing Hagia Sopia which was the biggest church for over a thousand years and was built during the Byzantine era. Most of the paintings were covered up because it had been used for a mosque when the Ottomans came so they were in the middle of uncovering all the art from back then. After that we just wondered around some more because the city is just so interesting to spend time in. Today was our low key day because Linda hasn't been feeling the greatest so we just hung out and explored the city some more until we catch our overnight train to take us back to Athens and then the ferry to Rome.

Side note: Vit and Stevei would recommend you go to Turkey. Its amazing and  really different  from the rest of europe. Plus everything is cheaper :D

hey... so where u from? :) haha I'm totally jealous of all your experiences (except having to kiss Grecians), it sounds like a great time for you guys. Hope Linda feels better so you guys can keep up the good times, especially in Rome. Go to the top of Palatine Hill and look over the ruins of the Forum, it's fantastic.

And I'm glad you found your underwear!

So, you really think they "forgot" that extra bag of laundry? MEN!!! Just be glad that you didn't have to kiss them! Oh, silly me, they're not Greek...Enjoy Rome; I'm sure the men will show more chivalry (lol).

Didn't I warn you about the Turkish guys? They wouldn't take their eyes off of my boobs before realising I was a man.
