Wow. So I have been travelling now for 3 weeks! It seems like I have been doing this for a lifetime! Anyways, so right after leaving my last entry I ventured out by myself in Istanbul which I though would be worse than it actually was. Once I started wondering around I ran into a friend from the hostel, Jon, who convinced me to see the Spice Market before I left. Jon, Liz and I went to the spice market where it turned into feeding Janet everything that I hadn't had an oppurtunity to try yet - Turkish Delight (not very good), corn on the cob from the vendor, the weird gummy ice cream and then finally the HUGE baked potato (there will be a pic eventually cuz it was sooo good). The spice market was really amazing, there were just bins of spices and other food that was really cheap and the locals sold it. After this experience I actually left Turkey via Thessolniki to Athens. The train ride to Athens was rather interesting, because after missing the train we were supposed to take, then getting on the wrong train that we didnt have resos for and then our train stopped working!! Luckily Linda and I were with Jon and Liz so we drank a bottle of cheap wine and played cards and backgammon. When our train broke we were in the middle of nowhere in the Greek countryside. When we finally got to another train station all that was at the station was just the little hut and then it was surrounded by fields!!! Luckily it didn't take long and we were going to Athens (although slower than planned). Then making our way to the ferry was very uneventful. On the ferry Linda was still not feeling well so she had a cabin while I was just on the deck so thankfully we had made friends with 2 guys from Utah that I was able to hang around with. They introduced me to watching soccer with the Manchestor vs Chelsey game, which surprisingly soccer is pretty good to watch.
Unfortunately, near the end of the ferry ride Linda decided that she was going to go back to her sis's because she was still feeling sick and had tonsilitious.
I ended up going to Rome by myself which I had the pleasure of meeting a group of about 10 nuns that all got lost in the train and tried to take my seat! This part of the trip was the beginning of falling in love with Italy, the mountains and the countryside was absolutely gorgeous! So I managed to get myself safely to my hostel in Rome, where I got there right in time for the free supper where I got to make alot of new friends in the hostel. Through the wonderful powers of cheap wine I met a group of people that wanted to see Rome at night while walking the streets with a bottle of wine. We went to the Spanish steps, some cool fountain and then finally the colliseum. Even though I was by myself it didn't feel like it at all because of all the people that I meet that were also travelling by themselves and wanted to go out exploring.
On the Friday it was my Vatican day, where I went to the Vatican Museum and to St. Peter's Basillica with the Ryan, Alpha Brian, Brody and Beta Brian group. The museum was really interesting but was soo huge that in the end you couldn't even pay that much attention because you were just trying soo hard to get to the Sistine Chapel so you can have a rest. Part of being so tired was the 2 hour wait before even getting in. The paintings were crazy and it was insane to think of how long ago they were all completed. My favorite was St. Peters though. We went up to the top of the dome and got a view of all of Rome. After this long day it was pubcrawl night, starting off at the colliseum! It ended up being only 3 of us when we had started with a bigger group earlier in the evening. Due to some mad drinking game skills we ended up getting alot of free shooters (which should explain how the rest of the night went). Somehow I manged to roll out of bed this morning and after packing I had my Roman ruins day to see the Colliseum and the Roman Forum (sooooo great)! After all of this I still managed to make it to Naples where everyone in the city has been unbelievably kind to the confused traveller. So after this huge message I am ready to fall asleep in this chair. sorry it got really sparse, there were more exciting stories but I just dont have the energy to write them. So I am now going to be spending 2 days in Naple and then go to Florence where Linda will hopefully be able to meet back up with me!! I hope all is going well for all of you!!! Miss you guys!!
